One of the most common questions I get asked is how much a bathroom renovation actually costs in Adelaide.

Bathroom renovation costs are usually shaped by the age of the home, whether the layout changes, and the level of finishes you choose.

For example, renovating a bathroom in a 1950s Adelaide home is very different to renovating a bathroom in a house built in the 1990s. Older homes often have earthenware underfloor plumbing that should be replaced during the renovation. Newer homes usually already have PVC plumbing in place, which can reduce some of the work involved if the layout stays similar. Not sure what year you home was built? Book a Call

Here’s a realistic breakdown based on what we’re seeing right now across Adelaide homes.

Essential Bathroom Renovation: $30,000 – $35,000

This is where many bathroom renovations across Adelaide usually sit.

It’s a complete bathroom renovation with good quality finishes and usually suits homeowners wanting to refresh the space properly without going overboard on upgrades.

This generally includes new underfloor plumbing, waterproofing, floor to ceiling tiling, a new vanity, toilet, shower, and standard range tapware. The layout normally stays mostly the same.

Elevated Bathroom Renovation: $35,000 – $45,000

This is where a lot of renovations end up once homeowners start making a few upgrades.

At this level we can usually change the layout, add custom vanities, feature walls, square set ceilings, better quality tiles and tapware, and more detailed finishes throughout.

It’s a noticeable step up from the Essential range and gives homeowners more flexibility with design and finishes.

Signature Bathroom Renovation: $45,000 – $60,000+

This is usually where we are completely transforming the bathroom and using more detailed finishes throughout.

At this level we are often making the bathroom larger, fully changing the layout, and including higher end finishes and custom details.

This range commonly includes things like Velux skylights, underfloor heating, custom shower screens, custom mirrors, and more detailed tiling work with mitred edges, feature walls, and larger format tiles.

These bathrooms usually involve a lot more planning, labour, and finishing detail behind the scenes.

What We Commonly Find In Older Adelaide Homes

One of the biggest things homeowners underestimate is the amount of preparation involved before rebuilding begins.

In older Adelaide homes, it is common to uncover issues once demolition starts. This can include asbestos, moisture damage, rotten timber, unstable flooring, salt damp issues, or old plumbing systems that should be replaced while everything is exposed.

A professional renovation builder should usually be able to identify many of these potential issues early based on similar projects and the age of the home.

This is why detailed quoting and renovation experience matter.

For example, if there is a possibility that timber reinforcement or efflorescence treatment may be required once the bathroom is stripped back to frame or brickwork, this should be discussed and clearly allowed for early in the process.

If the work ends up not being required, those costs can simply be removed from the final scope.

We recently renovated a bathroom in an older Adelaide home where the homeowner originally budgeted for a fairly standard renovation, but once demolition started we uncovered damaged timber and old earthenware plumbing underneath the floor that needed replacing before rebuilding could begin.

Most of the important work in a bathroom renovation happens before the tiles even go on.

Why Waterproofing And Tiling Matter So Much

Waterproofing is one of the most important parts of any bathroom renovation and should always follow manufacturer specifications correctly.

This includes using the right primer before waterproofing begins, installing bond breakers correctly, and applying the membrane to the required thickness.

At Adelaide Renos Group, we are Gripset accredited applicators and take extra care during the waterproofing stage to help achieve the best possible long term result.

Upstairs bathrooms also require additional waterproofing attention because any future leak has a much higher chance of affecting ceilings and rooms below.

Tiling is also one of the most detailed parts of a bathroom renovation and poor workmanship usually stands out immediately.

Good tiling is not just about laying tiles straight. It comes down to preparation, correct falls, tile alignment, edge details, and using the right glue, grout, and silicone systems throughout the process.

Floor to ceiling tiling also requires additional preparation that many homeowners are not aware of. In many bathrooms, existing cornices need to be removed before tiling and then reinstalled afterward to achieve a cleaner finish.

Why Some Bathroom Quotes Are Much Cheaper

One of the biggest mistakes homeowners make is comparing renovation quotes based only on the final number.

Comparing bathroom quotes is not always easy because not every builder includes the same things.

Sometimes important preparation work is missing from cheaper quotes. Other times, builders may price low initially and then introduce variations during the renovation once work has already started.

Experience also plays a major role.

It is important to ask what type of renovation projects the builder normally works on, how they solve problems during renovations, and whether they can foresee any potential issues before work begins.

One of the best questions homeowners can ask is:

"Do you foresee any potential issues during this renovation?"

Builders who work in renovations every day are usually able to identify warning signs early and explain what may need attention before the project progresses too far.

We have also written another article explaining why bathroom renovation quotes in Adelaide can vary so much between builders and what homeowners should look out for when comparing quotes.

Advice For Homeowners Planning A Bathroom Renovation

Before starting a bathroom renovation, it is worth spending time looking at inspiration photos and understanding what you actually like and what you do not like. See our recent projects

This helps avoid rushed decisions and confusion later during the renovation.

It also helps your builder understand the overall direction and style you are trying to achieve.

Suppliers such as Beaumont Tiles, National Tiles, ABI Interiors, Tile Cloud, Yabby, and other showrooms can be a good place to start gathering inspiration and understanding different styles and finishes.

Final Thoughts

A bathroom renovation is one of the most detailed renovations in a home. Good preparation, proper waterproofing, quality plumbing, and experienced workmanship all make a massive difference to how the bathroom performs long term.

Every bathroom and every home is different, especially across older Adelaide properties. Taking the time to plan the renovation properly from the start usually leads to a much smoother project and a better long term result
